Since 1776 Doncaster Racecourse has staged the iconic St Leger Stakes – the oldest of Britain’s five Classic races during the flat racing season (Newmarket 1000 & 2000 Guineas, Epsom Derby and Epsom Oaks).
The St Leger is also famous for being the final leg of the legendary Triple Crown. Throughout the season the finest three-year-old colts compete for the major titles and the biggest of them all is the Triple Crown. To win the Triple Crown a horse must win the 2000 Guineas, Epsom Derby and then the St Leger Stakes.
Such is the difficulty of these feat that only 15 horse have won the three races with the last coming in 1970 when the magnificent Nijinsky took the race in fabulous style.
The St Leger is run over a distance of one-mile-six-furlongs and the extra distance compared with the other classics means that horse require great stamina and speed to take the race.
